HP Identity

An all-in-one Identity & SSO solutions for HP business estate. Consolidating all HP user accounts into one seamless experience.

Overview

HP Identity Manager initiative was a hefty undertaking by HP. The company wanted to increase digital security while centralizing all of HP's disparate identity management systems into a single identity service. This effort not only helped the company's business units, but also its customers as they would now have a central login and management experience for all HP experiences and products.

CONTRIBUTION

My contributions to the project were in the areas of Design Lead and Management. At the time, I managed a small team of designers, one of whom worked with me on establishing wireframes and user flows for commercial and consumer experiences.

From a design standpoint, I created the visual identity and coded an HTML/CSS prototype to hand over to developers, so they could use it as a baseline to overlay the logic and web services.

Challenges

One of the most interesting challenges we encountered during the development of this product was around migrating all of the Identity Management Systems from the Business Unit/Divisions within HP while providing an equal or better account management experience, including theming a given product.

Finding a way to lift and shift existing customers seamlessly while centralizing all of their disparate accounts into one single pane of glass was a challenge. It needed to be as good or better than their current solution while supporting the same account management features.

We decided to provide a vanilla, out-of-the-box Identity Service that any business unit could utilize for their new or existing products. This service allowed for account creation and management by the user and enterprise.  For pre-existing Identity Systems, we created connectors to port over existing customers while providing a themeable UI for brand-specific applications. Below is an example of the Sprout Marketplace using our vanilla Identity Management service.

users perspective

While each product could have its own account management UI in its respective application, we also wanted to provide a way for the user to see a macro view of their HP Products and Services. The HP Account Manager served as the central location where users could manage all their account information, passwords, devices, subscriptions, warranties, and more.

The idea for this manager was to provide all of the standard services (e.g., Login, Create Account, Forget Flow, Profile Management, Purchase History, Device, Services, and Subscription Management) but also provide the ability for users to pivot into app-specific management flows, in the app's respective UI.

PROTOTYPE

Here is a click-through prototype I coded up myself. I coded the  HTML/CSS part and leaned on a friend/colleague for some help with the Javascript. The development team adopted most of the HTML & CSS I coded and integrated the conditional logic / web services required to make the whole thing come to life.
